Every token you hold on Solana lives in a token account, and every token account holds a refundable SOL deposit. When the account is empty, closing it sends that deposit to its owner. Sol Incinerator has been live since December 2021, and our transaction index starts in August 2022. Here's what the 196 million closes recorded since then show.
How many token accounts has Sol Incinerator closed?
From August 2022 to October 6, 2026, Sol Incinerator closed 196,058,091 empty SPL Token and Token-2022 accounts, returning 399,660 SOL in rent deposits to their owners before fees. The busiest month was January 2025, with 15,895,394 accounts closed. Token-2022 accounts made up 71.9% of 2026's closes.
| Year | Accounts closed | Token-2022 share | SOL returned (before fees) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 (from August) | 1,312,906 | 0% | 2,677.4 |
| 2023 | 7,443,959 | 0.03% | 15,180.4 |
| 2024 | 51,013,605 | 0.6% | 104,042.7 |
| 2025 | 87,495,829 | 5.7% | 178,609.2 |
| 2026 (to October 6) | 48,791,792 | 71.9% | 99,150.2 |
| Total | 196,058,091 | 399,659.8 |
Rows may not add up exactly to the total because of rounding. Monthly closes climbed through late 2024 and peaked in January 2025, when 15,895,394 accounts were closed, holding 32,417.1 SOL before fees. Since then most months have landed between 4 and 8 million.
How fast did Token-2022 take over?
Token-2022 is Solana's newer token program. For most of our history its accounts were a rounding error: under 2% of each month's closes through October 2025, apart from 3.3% in February 2024. Then the mix flipped within two months.
| Month | Accounts closed | Token-2022 share |
|---|---|---|
| October 2025 | 4,115,123 | 1.5% |
| November 2025 | 4,124,260 | 31.3% |
| December 2025 | 5,615,658 | 56.6% |
| March 2026 | 5,833,035 | 75.5% |
| July 2026 | 4,350,082 | 80.3% |
| September 2026 | 5,535,840 | 63.8% |
By mid-2026, roughly four in five accounts we closed were Token-2022 accounts. September's dip in share came mostly from SPL Token closes, which doubled from 994,895 in August to 2,005,064, while Token-2022 closes fell 9%. Sol Incinerator finds and closes empty accounts from both programs.
What changed after the September 2026 rent cuts?
Solana lowered its rent rate in two steps: in early September (the first surplus withdrawals in our data appear on September 3) and again on September 11, 2026. As of October 7, 2026, a new standard token account needs 0.00148844 SOL instead of the original 0.00203928 SOL. Accounts opened before the cuts keep their original deposit until the surplus is withdrawn, so the average closed account fell only as more of the accounts being closed held a lower reserve:
| Period | Average deposit per closed account | Holding the original reserve | Holding the September 11 reserve |
|---|---|---|---|
| August 2026 | 2,068,276 lamports (about 0.00207 SOL) | 97.3% | 0% |
| September 2026 | 1,840,882 lamports (about 0.00184 SOL) | 42.7% | 28.9% |
| October 1–6, 2026 | 1,668,970 lamports (about 0.00167 SOL) | 22.9% | 60.9% |
The cuts also left every older account holding more than it now needs. That surplus can be withdrawn while the account stays open, and people did exactly that: in September, Sol Incinerator processed 2,820,754 surplus withdrawals, returning 1,141.4 SOL before fees without closing anything.
The day after the second cut, September 12, was the standout. We recorded 377,231 closes and 505,362 surplus withdrawals, together returning 976.3 SOL before fees. That's 2.5 times the closes of an average day in the last week of August.

Each row is one UTC month with SPL Token and Token-2022 closes, the Token-2022 share, lamports and SOL returned before fees, the average lamports per closed account, and the last day the row covers. The October 2026 row covers October 1 to 6 only.

How we counted
- Source: Sol Incinerator's production transaction index, which starts in August 2022. Empty-account closes appear in small numbers in August and September 2022 and reach normal volume from October 2022. Activity from December 2021 to July 2022 isn't in the index and isn't counted.
- What counts as a close: one closed empty account in the SPL Token or Token-2022 program. Burns, NFT burns, domain burns and other operations are excluded, as are surplus withdrawals, which we report separately and count as withdrawal events (one account can be withdrawn from more than once).
- SOL returned: the lamports held by each closed account, which go to the account's owner. Figures are before Sol Incinerator's service fees and the network's transaction fees.
- Reserve buckets: "original" and "September 11" reserves are exact matches for 165-byte SPL Token and 170-byte Token-2022 accounts. An older account whose surplus was withdrawn before closing also holds the new reserve. Accounts holding the early-September reserve (10.2% of September closes, 0.7% of October 1–6) and accounts of other sizes fall in neither bucket.
- Scope: these are accounts closed through Sol Incinerator only, not every token account closed on Solana. Months are UTC calendar months, and the data was queried on October 7, 2026.

If you've traded on Solana, your wallet may still have empty accounts holding deposits. Fun Mode finds them, along with any surplus you can withdraw from accounts you keep, and shows what you'll get back before you approve anything.
