You swapped, used a DeFi app or traded with a bot, and now your wallet shows Wrapped SOL or wSOL next to your regular SOL. It's still your SOL. It just sits in a token account instead of your main balance, so you can't spend it on network fees until you unwrap it.
What is wrapped SOL (wSOL)?
Wrapped SOL (wSOL) is SOL held in a token account for the Token Program's native mint, So11111111111111111111111111111111111111112, so apps can handle SOL like any other SPL token. It's still your SOL, one for one. Unwrapping turns it back into regular SOL, and closing the account also returns its rent deposit.
Solana's token programs move SPL tokens through token accounts. Native SOL lives in your wallet's main account, so a program that wants to treat SOL like a token first moves it into a token account for the native mint. The token amount in that account tracks the SOL it holds above its rent-exempt reserve, one for one.
The account itself also holds a rent deposit, just like any other token account. That's why closing a wSOL account can return slightly more than the wSOL balance your wallet displays: the deposit comes back too.
Why is there wSOL in my wallet?
A normal Jupiter swap doesn't leave wSOL behind: it wraps and unwraps SOL automatically, so a swap to SOL delivers native SOL. You can end up holding wSOL when:
- You turned on Jupiter's Use wSOL setting, which makes swaps to SOL deliver wSOL instead of native SOL.
- Another app you used, such as a DeFi protocol or trading tool, paid out to your wSOL account instead of your main balance.
- An app wrapped SOL for a trade and left the token account open afterwards, sometimes with nothing left in it.
How do I unwrap wSOL back to SOL?
On Jupiter's swap page, connect your wallet and click unwrap on the line that says you have wrapped SOL; it converts your entire wSOL balance to regular SOL. From a terminal, spl-token unwrap closes the wSOL account and returns its balance plus rent deposit.
Unwrapping moves the wrapped balance back into your wallet as regular SOL. Closing the wSOL account does that and also returns its rent deposit.
With Jupiter. Connect your wallet on Jupiter's swap page. When it detects wSOL, it shows a line under the swap form saying you have wrapped SOL that you can unwrap. Click unwrap and approve the transaction. It converts your entire wSOL balance, and you don't need the Use wSOL setting turned on.
From a terminal. If you already use the Solana CLI with your wallet's keypair, spl-token unwrap closes your wSOL account and sends everything in it to your wallet. Our token account guide explains when the command-line route makes sense and what to check before using a local keypair.
Either way, the transaction's network fee comes out of your regular SOL, not the wSOL. If your wallet's SOL balance is at zero, add a little first, or start with the empty-account cleanup below.
Recover the deposit from empty wSOL accounts
Some unwrap methods move the SOL out but leave the empty account open, and sometimes an app empties the account without closing it. An empty wSOL account holds only its rent deposit, and it stays locked there until the account is closed.
Sol Incinerator scans your wallet for empty token accounts, including empty wSOL accounts. Select the ones you're done with, approve the cleanup, and we'll send their deposits back to your wallet, minus our cleanup fee. Your other tokens and NFTs stay where they are.
No regular SOL left at all? Gasless Pay is automatic: when a cleanup of empty accounts qualifies, we cover the upfront network fee and take its charge from the SOL that comes back.
