Solana counts SOL in lamports, the way a dollar is counted in cents, only much finer. Balances, fees and rent deposits all come back from the network as whole numbers of lamports, so you'll meet them in RPC responses, transaction data and developer tools. Use the converter below to switch between the two units.
How many lamports are in one SOL?
One SOL is exactly 1,000,000,000 lamports, and one lamport is 0.000000001 SOL. To convert lamports to SOL, divide by 1,000,000,000. To convert SOL to lamports, multiply by 1,000,000,000. A lamport is the smallest unit of SOL, so balances and fees are always whole numbers of lamports.
1,000,000,000 lamports = 1 SOL
The converter works on exact whole numbers, so it never rounds: every lamport amount has an exact SOL value, and any SOL amount with up to nine decimal places is a whole number of lamports.
Common amounts in lamports and SOL
| What | Lamports | SOL |
|---|---|---|
| One lamport | 1 | 0.000000001 |
| Base fee for one signature | 5,000 | 0.000005 |
| Rent-exempt minimum for an account with no data (current rate) | 650,240 | 0.00065024 |
| Standard token account deposit (current rate) | 1,488,440 | 0.00148844 |
| Standard token account deposit (original rent setting) | 2,039,280 | 0.00203928 |
| One SOL | 1,000,000,000 | 1 |
The current-rate amounts come from getMinimumBalanceForRentExemption, checked on October 7, 2026, after Solana lowered its rent rate twice in September. Our Solana rent calculator works out the deposit for any account size at every rent step.
What about micro-lamports?
Micro-lamports show up in one place: the compute unit price that legacy and v0 transactions use to set a priority fee. One lamport is 1,000,000 micro-lamports. The priority fee is the compute unit price times the compute unit limit, divided by 1,000,000 and rounded up to a whole lamport, so the fee you pay is still in lamports. The newer v1 transaction format skips micro-lamports and sets the priority fee as a lamport total. Our guide to Solana transaction fees explains how the base fee and priority fee add up.
Where you'll see lamports
- RPC responses. Methods like
getBalanceandgetMinimumBalanceForRentExemptionreturn lamports. - Transaction data. A parsed SOL transfer reports its amount in a
lamportsfield, andgetTransactiongives the fee and account balances in lamports. - Code. Programs and SDKs move SOL in lamports; in JavaScript,
LAMPORTS_PER_SOLfrom@solana/web3.jsis 1,000,000,000. - Rent deposits. Every account holds a deposit set in lamports per byte. Close an empty token account and its owner can reclaim that deposit.
Turn lamports back into SOL you can use
Every empty token account still holds its rent deposit in lamports. Sol Incinerator finds them, shows what you'll get back before you approve, and closes them so the SOL returns to your wallet.
