Can You Claim a Loss on Crypto You Cannot Sell?

An asset can remain in your wallet even when every practical exit has disappeared. A decentralized exchange may return no route, an NFT marketplace may show no bids, or the token account may be frozen. “Cannot sell” describes the problem, but it does not by itself answer the tax question.

This is not financial, legal, or tax advice. Loss eligibility, timing, proof, and the meaning of a sale, burn, theft, abandonment, or worthless-asset claim vary by jurisdiction and circumstances. Consult a qualified accountant or tax attorney where you file before taking an irreversible action.

Can you claim a loss on crypto you cannot sell?

There is no universal answer. Your jurisdiction may require a recognized disposal, may offer a worthless-asset process without a sale, or may apply another rule. First prove what asset you own and why no market exists; then ask a qualified local professional which action and evidence, if any, support your position.

The key is to separate four questions that are often collapsed into one:

  1. Is the asset genuinely yours and correctly identified? Save the contract, mint, or NFT address and acquisition history.
  2. Is there really no executable market? A displayed value of zero can be missing price data, not proof of worthlessness.
  3. What actions are technically possible? Transfer restrictions, frozen accounts, escrow, and staking can block a sale without eliminating value.
  4. What does your jurisdiction recognize? This is the legal question a wallet tool cannot answer.

What does no liquidity actually mean?

For a fungible token, test whether a reputable aggregator or exchange can produce an executable quote for the exact asset and quantity. For an NFT, check the venues where that verified collection trades for item, trait, and collection bids. Record the date, time, venue, and result.

No route is different from a terrible route. Thin liquidity may still produce an executable sale with severe price impact. A failed route is also different from a frozen token account or non-transferable asset. Check the on-chain state before describing the market condition.

Market screenshots can disappear. Pair them with immutable identifiers: contract or mint address, wallet address, and transaction signatures. The goal is a record another person can follow later.

What options exist when crypto cannot be sold normally?

The observable choices are to keep the asset, sell it through any real market, make a nominal-price transfer to a counterparty where available, burn it, or use a jurisdiction-specific claim that may leave ownership unchanged. These are not equivalent. Discuss the recognized option with a qualified adviser before acting.

OptionWhat happens to the assetWhat the record shows
Keep itOwnership remainsNo disposal transaction
Market saleTransfers to a buyerExecuted price and counterparty
Nominal-price saleTransfers for minimal considerationCounterparty and nominal proceeds
BurnUnits are destroyedSupply reduction, no buyer
Local worthless-asset processDepends on local lawA legal claim rather than necessarily an on-chain transfer

The last row is why a global answer is unsafe. HMRC's published UK cryptoasset guidance, for example, describes a negligible-value claim for qualifying tokens still owned. That route does not become a rule for the United States, Canada, Australia, or any other jurisdiction.

How can you sell an unsellable Solana asset?

For Solana tokens and NFTs that truly lack an ordinary market, the Tax Loss Harvester can transfer selected assets to a counterparty for 1 lamport each (0.000000001 SOL). The tool creates an observable sale; it does not decide what that sale means on a return.

Read the full economics before signing. The completion view separately reports:

  • sale proceeds;
  • source token-account rent released when the account closes;
  • protocol fee;
  • optional partner fee;
  • destination token-account rent; and
  • net before network fees.

A destination account may need to be created for the buyer, which makes rent a cost. Compressed NFTs have no individual token account and no reclaimable token-account rent. The flow therefore is not guaranteed to return net SOL.

If a normal market exists, use the Jupiter-powered swap route instead. A nominal-price buyer is for the absence of a market, not a substitute for one.

Is burning enough when you cannot sell?

Burning can be appropriate for wallet cleanup, especially for unsolicited spam, but it creates a different event. The token is destroyed; no counterparty receives it and there are no sale proceeds. A standard Solana token burn can be followed by closing its empty token account to recover rent, while a compressed NFT burn returns 0 SOL because no individual token account exists.

Do not infer tax treatment from the fact that an interface calls something a “burn” or “disposal.” Show your adviser the actual confirmed transaction and ask how local rules apply.

What evidence should support the decision?

Keep the asset identity, acquisition date and cost, wallet address, quantities, market and liquidity checks, any transfer restriction, advice received, final transaction signature, proceeds, and costs. If you chose not to make an on-chain transaction because a local claim applies, preserve the evidence and filing documents that the local rule requires.

For US readers, the IRS says taxpayers must keep records sufficient to support return positions and identifies asset type, date and time, units, fair market value, and basis among relevant digital-asset data. That is a recordkeeping statement, not a ruling that your asset qualifies for a loss.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you claim a loss on crypto you cannot sell?

It depends on the law where you file, your facts, and what happens to the asset. Some jurisdictions may recognize a completed disposal; others provide a worthless-asset or negligible-value process without a sale. A zero wallet quote alone does not decide the result, so consult a qualified local tax professional.

What if a crypto token has no liquidity?

Verify the exact asset and try to obtain a current executable quote through an ordinary market. Record the venue, time, amount, and result. If no market route exists, ask your adviser about the recognized alternatives before burning or making a nominal-price sale, because each action creates a different record.

Does burning worthless crypto count as selling it?

No at the transaction level. Burning permanently destroys the units and has no buyer or sale proceeds; selling transfers them to a counterparty for consideration. Whether either event supports a loss under a particular tax system is a legal conclusion that a qualified professional must make for your situation.

How does a 1-lamport sale of worthless Solana tokens work?

Sol Incinerator's Tax Loss Harvester transfers each selected token or NFT to a counterparty for 1 lamport. It also shows source-account rent, protocol and optional partner fees, destination-account rent, and net before network fees. The tool records a sale but cannot promise a tax deduction or positive net return.
